Professor Hsun-Ping Hsieh from the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has been honored with the 2024 ACM KDD Test of Time Award for his groundbreaking contributions to AI and machine learning. His award-winning research, conducted in collaboration with Microsoft Research Asia, has significantly advanced the prediction and estimation of environmental data across large urban areas. The recognition was conferred during the prestigious KDD-2024 conference, organized by ACM's Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (SIGKDD), held in Barcelona from August 25 to 29.

Professor Hsieh’s innovative work addressed critical challenges in smart city development, including the limited availability of sensors and the high energy consumption associated with large-scale sensor deployment. His novel AI algorithms and machine learning frameworks provide highly accurate environmental data predictions, enabling cities to optimize resource allocation and response strategies. These methods are applicable to a broad spectrum of urban issues, such as air quality monitoring, noise pollution management, traffic flow optimization, tourist crowd control, crime prevention, and disease transmission modeling.

By offering scalable and cost-effective solutions, Professor Hsieh's research has set a new benchmark for leveraging AI in urban governance.
